Synopsis

Set against the backdrop of political tension in late 1930s Austria, the drama follows Werner von Basil, a gifted but headstrong intellectual. He is arrested on smuggling charges and imprisoned by the Nazi regime, where he faces harsh interrogation and psychological abuse as they try to force a confession. With the world becoming increasingly unstable, Werner finds solace in an old chess tactics book he manages to keep.
