Nathan on Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

7/10 · Nov 25, 2022

_Black Panther: Wakanda Forever_ faced a nearly insurmountable challenge following Chadwick Boseman’s death, and director Ryan Coogler largely succeeds in piecing together a moving narrative. However, I feel the film tries to juggle too many elements. Numerous subplots and new characters are introduced, making it difficult for the movie to maintain focus. While I appreciated Riri Williams and her interactions with the Wakandans, her storyline felt unnecessary. Removing this character would have allowed for a more concentrated story, shortening the runtime and improving the viewing experience. The writing was adequate, but relied heavily on exposition. There were many lines solely intended to convey information to the audience, which felt unnatural and disrupted my engagement with the film. These shortcomings significantly impacted how much I enjoyed it. Despite these issues, I believe the movie excels in other areas. The action is infrequent, but when present, it’s intense and well-executed. Some truly distinctive fight sequences and weaponry are showcased by the "Atlanteans," resulting in visually impressive scenes with outstanding CGI work. I particularly appreciated the final battle's use of letterboxing, a stylistic choice absent elsewhere in the film; it created a sense of grandeur that I found to be an excellent touch. The acting was superb across the board. Angela Bassett delivered a mesmerizing performance, deeply affecting me with her portrayal of grief and sorrow over her son’s passing. There's one scene in particular that gave me chills. Dominique Thorne made a strong impression as Ironheart, and Lupita Nyong’o shone despite limited screen time. I was very fond of Winston Duke and wished he had more opportunities to appear. He was largely pushed aside, which I believe was a mistake. Letitia Wright is the standout here; she took on an incredibly difficult role and gave a remarkable performance. I never imagined her as a leading actress, but she disproved my expectations. I usually don’t comment on music in reviews, but the score for this movie was exceptionally well-crafted and significantly enhanced many scenes. Every piece resonated with me, and it felt seamlessly integrated into the film. Despite its flaws, _Black Panther: Wakanda Forever_ is still an enjoyable film and among the stronger entries in Marvel Phase IV. Score: 75% | Verdict: Good
