The Movie Mob on Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

7/10 · Nov 11, 2022

Wakanda Forever proved to be a sincere effort in addressing serious subjects and appropriately memorializing its lead actor, though it felt weighed down by the need to establish expansive new settings and numerous intricate personalities. My reaction to Wakanda Forever was complicated. The tribute to Chadwick Boseman’s memory felt genuine and significant. It was smart of the filmmakers to focus on how T’Challa's death impacted his family and country, which could have led to a richer exploration of characters like Shuri, Nakia, and M’Baku. However, the movie mostly functioned as an introduction to Namor and Talokan. While it was appropriate for the film to adopt a more subdued atmosphere while confronting themes of loss and heritage, this pervasive sadness contributed to a slow pace throughout its length. Winston Duke provided some moments of lightness. The acting was quite good across the board, with Angela Bassett’s portrayal being particularly noteworthy. I did find aspects to appreciate in the movie, but the consistently mournful feeling made it harder to fully enjoy, and Namor's introduction and the danger he posed to Wakanda consumed so much screen time that providing a sense of resolution for those dealing with grief felt challenging.
