I wasn't particularly impressed by this film. I don’t believe it warrants the numerous one-star ratings it has received, nor do I feel that Will Smith or his son Jaden delivered performances as poor as some people suggest. My main issue with the movie lies in how the story was actually presented. The initial concept isn't inherently flawed; it had potential to be a decent film. However, what we ended up seeing felt superficial. Even worse, it’s full of nonsensical and illogical elements. The movie begins with the familiar trope of humans destroying the planet, emphasizing how terrible we are—a message that appears constantly in movies (and books). When I want to consider those questions, I read scientific papers; I don't need them forced upon me when I’m just seeking entertainment. Then it's revealed that an alien force was sending monsters to Earth, genetically engineered to kill humans. Okay…? If their goal was extermination, why go about it in such a complicated manner? And what happened afterward? When the initial attempt seemingly failed, did they simply abandon the effort? The core narrative involves Cypher and Katai’s ship crashing on old Earth, now supposedly uninhabitable for humans. But aside from the fact that one would expect advanced technology to easily avoid meteor storms in a thousand years, how can Cypher apparently “sense” an approaching storm? Let's move on to Earth itself. It is presented as being unsuitable for human habitation. Couldn’t they have made more of an effort to make it appear that way? To me, it looks like a lush, semi-tropical paradise. Also, the temperatures are said to plummet far below freezing each night, yet the vegetation is thriving and green? And speaking of vegetation, how can people require “breathing pills” when there's so much plant life producing oxygen? These inconsistencies really stand out and detract from the movie’s quality. Then there are the Ursa creatures. They were created to eliminate humans, but they are blind and track their prey by sensing fear pheromones. Really? What kind of alien would design a creature like that? Any competent bioengineer would ensure it had every possible advantage—sight, hearing, smell, and likely other senses such as infrared vision. And this whole idea of needing to be fearless is just absurd. Aside from simple precautions like staying downwind, all humans would need are airtight combat suits. I’m not arguing that a science fiction movie (or any film) needs to be entirely scientifically accurate, but this one has too many obvious flaws. In my opinion, it's not the complete disaster some people portray it as. It does offer some entertainment value, but barely more than 4 out of 10 stars.
