Synopsis

This adaptation of Mikhail Lermontov's classic tells the story of Ashik Kerib, a traveling minstrel whose love for a wealthy merchant's daughter results in his exile and a long journey. Rejected by the father who once considered him family, Kerib is forced to wander the wilderness for a thousand and one nights, performing for those less fortunate. During his travels, Kerib’s absence deeply affects those he left behind, though his fate remains uncertain. Directed by Sergei Parajanov, the film uses striking visual sequences—like living paintings—filled with symbolism and imagery. Turkish and Azerbaijani folk music adds to the film's mysterious and wondrous atmosphere.
