Following an attack, Greg Kinnear’s character ends up hospitalized, which means his little dog ("Jill") has to be looked after by his grumpy neighbor, "Melvin" (Jack Nicholson)—certainly not the most natural or affectionate caretaker. This man isn't exactly popular; only waitress "Carol" (Helen Hunt) seems willing to tolerate his rude and self-centered ways. When her son gets sick, she needs to take time away, leaving "Melvin" completely on his own—and without breakfast! The answer they find is a trip together, and with Nicholson and Hunt both performing exceptionally well, Kinnear also doing a great job playing off them, and thanks to a screenplay from James L. Brooks at the top of his game, what emerges is a very enjoyable and down-to-earth mix of humor and an unexpected kind of romance as the three discover there’s much more to life than they ever thought possible. It runs on a little too long, but the characters are well-developed and interesting, and there's real chemistry between them—and even the dog! It’s a heartwarming film that touches on serious themes, but handles them in a powerful way without being overly moralistic, leaving you with something to ponder while also making you smile. It's certainly worth seeing.
