René Clair’s direction makes this a truly excellent version of one of Agatha Christie's more captivating murder mysteries, and I believe it remains unmatched even after roughly 75 years. A wonderful group of actors are brought together for a weekend getaway on an isolated island by hosts they’ve never encountered before. Upon arrival, their host—through a recording—accuses each guest of committing terrible acts; then, one by one, they begin to die. I feel it's necessary to mention that the film includes language and terms that might be considered objectionable today, but if you can set aside those concerns for about 100 minutes, you’ll enjoy a terrific murder mystery with an impressive cast—particularly Barry Fitzgerald ("Judge Quincannon"), Louis Hayward ("Lombard"), and June Duprez ("Vera"). There are also noteworthy performances from Judith Anderson and Sir C. Aubrey Smith, along with some inventive staging/dialogue that leads to a genuinely satisfying conclusion with a surprising turn. Like several of Christie’s stories, it's entirely believable that anyone could be responsible, and on stage the character behind the scheme wasn’t always consistent—so don’t expect to figure out who is pulling the strings even if you've seen other versions.
