Dark Jedi on X-Men: Days of Future Past

8/10 · Oct 12, 2014

This turned out to be a good and genuinely entertaining film, which was somewhat unexpected since I typically find time travel plots messy and problematic—they often detract from the overall quality of a movie. This one wasn’t flawless, but it managed to avoid becoming completely derailed by its use of time travel. The initial scenes are rather striking, immediately immersing the viewer in a bleak future where mutants and humans alike are rounded up by sentinels. It brought *Terminator* to mind during those moments. Perhaps not groundbreaking from a broader perspective, the dark and somber opening wasn’t what I anticipated for an X-Men movie. Unfortunately, we quickly move into a time travel storyline when they send Wolverine back to 1973. This presented another opportunity to revisit the familiar narrative of mutant persecution—mutants are hunted, a “good” mutant is a dead mutant—a story we’ve seen countless times before. While the antagonist changes, the core concept remains the same and the justifications for hunting mutants feel as contrived as ever. Frankly, I find that angle repetitive and uninspired by now. Fortunately, the story is reasonably well-executed. The sequence where Wolverine wakes up and deals with those three thugs is quite humorous. It’s fairly standard fare, but still funny. Retrieving Magneto provides a nice moment, and the scene in the Pentagon—where guards and everything else are “frozen” while Maximoff calmly moves around and rearranges things—is laugh-out-loud hilarious. I really didn't care for the contrived plot twist where Magneto abruptly decides to cause trouble just as they were about to rescue Mystique, though. They could have invested some effort in devising a more clever way to complicate matters at that point. Wolverine’s sudden outburst during that scene only amplified my frustration. This is the primary reason I won't award this movie a top rating. Aside from that one scene, it's a well-made superhero film with impressive special effects. It’s certainly predictable, but most people—myself included—watch these movies primarily for the visual spectacle anyway. As long as the plot isn’t completely absurd, it can be overlooked. Time travel. I need to express my reservations about time travel in films because so many details simply don't align. In this movie, it's not overly intrusive, and the actual mechanics of time travel are mostly kept separate from the action. Wolverine goes back in time, engages in some action sequences, and saves the day. While dialogue occasionally references his origins in the future, that’s largely all there is to it. One thing really bothered me, though: Wolverine alters numerous events during his trip, yet nothing appears to change in the future until a single event occurs at the film's conclusion. Then everything shifts, and we get a happy ending. That kind of illogicality is what often plagues time travel narratives. Ultimately, this is an enjoyable movie. Without that weak plot twist near the middle, it would have easily earned a rating of 9 or 10.
