The revival, "A Return to 'Salem's Lot," is an embarrassing and cheaply made failure, particularly when held up against the much better original from 1979. This misguided attempt suffers consistently from performances that feel amateurish and a very apparent shortage of funds. A sense of exhaustion seems to hang over the uninspired filmmaking, as if those working on it both in front of and behind the camera eventually understood how silly this dull and generally lifeless project was early on. The result is something you can sit through, and thankfully most of it appears self-aware, with the filmmakers trying to add some dry humor; however, these attempts mostly elicit a slight smile at best. Instead of creating a film that’s skillfully blended with real horror and clever comedy, they've essentially made a gag.
