The movie adapts a work by Afrikaans writer Andre Brink, focusing on a political activist dedicated to dismantling apartheid and establishing a fully democratic South Africa. Steve Biko remains a celebrated figure and is considered a hero and martyr, given accounts of his death following torture—reportedly involving being thrown from a police building. Marlon Brando portrays the lawyer.
