Synopsis

Upon their return to Monterey, Anna Maria enters the Verdugo household to find her father absent. Pablo, their former servant, meets her with grim news: the old man is being held captive, and his life hangs in the balance. He will be killed, Pablo explains, unless Anna Maria delivers forty-five thousand pesos, rumored to be hidden within the house.
