It’s surprising how progressive agendas seemed to be affecting DC even in earlier productions. I feel compelled to say, with complete sincerity, that DC has really dropped the ball. They decided to make Aqualad, a young black man and the newly designated Aquaman, gay. It wasn't enough that they altered his appearance—giving him blonde hair (which is biologically impossible for someone of his ethnicity) and blue eyes—they then felt it necessary to introduce his sexuality into the storyline seemingly without any real purpose. And as if that weren’t problematic enough, his “boyfriend” turns out to be the replacement for Aqualad, essentially taking over his former girlfriend's affections. She subsequently dies, and her new boyfriend and Aquaman enter a homosexual relationship! I’d venture to guess this was intended to stem from shared grief? It seems incredibly forced. Honestly, did DC genuinely believe this would be well-received? The series never quite found its footing because of choices like these; the characters' narratives are constantly derailed by an overarching plot that no one involved seemed able to solidify. You’re left wanting some sense of development, but all you consistently get is a vague warning about impending danger. It should have been Young Justice, but instead it feels like "The Justice League & An Excessive Number of Younger Superheroes." This show clearly had promise, but something seriously disruptive was occurring behind the scenes with the writers and artists. That’s my take.
