XENA is a television program centering on a "forgotten" Greek warrior, and it was designed to accompany HERCULES. Hercules portrays a fairly conventional hero who generally strives to do what’s correct; in contrast, Xena is a former leader of armies seeking forgiveness but retaining some of the harsh qualities that led her to devastate others. It's an odd selection for the protagonist of an action-adventure series—her name, incidentally, translates from Greek as "the strange woman." The show felt peculiar due to its pronounced absence of uniformity. For instance, depictions of the afterlife shifted; at times it was the Greek Hades, other times Christian Heaven and Hell, then Hindu reincarnation, with no attempt made to unify these concepts. Similarly, the character Joxer fluctuated between being a despicable fool and something like a Holy Fool whose purity and loyalty affect Xena. Another oddity was its tendency to shift through different eras. Episodes were placed in locations such as the Trojan War, the Persian invasion of Greece, Caesar's time, and even one during a medieval witch trial. Furthermore, they would present a character who speaks earnestly about temptation and regret while dressing her in attire suggestive of a dominatrix. This inconsistency meant that some episodes could be quite good—like an adaptation of the Flying Dutchman story or a plot involving time travel where Xena struggles to suppress her darker impulses—while others were simply terrible.
