It’s unusual how thoroughly this series develops its characters and narrative, pushing boundaries to deliver something engaging—more so than many shows with larger ensembles. The English vocal performances are solid, the visuals maintain a consistent look, and the musical score evokes an older style. It has stood the test of time remarkably well and feels particularly pertinent these days, which is disheartening. Difficult subjects are handled with a thoughtful mix of levity and gravity. Those who persevere will find it surprisingly rewarding. I did feel that the rhythm felt inconsistent at times, although that could have been intentional and part of what makes it unique.
