There’s a real sense of wasted potential throughout this series that makes it feel like a letdown, though the ending does manage to pick things up somewhat. The basic idea is promising: a powerful mutant—or witch, as they apparently can't call them—is dealing with loss and tries to recreate what she believes was an ideal family based on sitcoms. The concept opens so many doors – imagine dedicating an episode to each decade (though some are jarringly left out), incorporating unsettling elements that aren’t really developed, expanding on the idea of manipulation, or examining what it means to have a family when you possess extraordinary abilities, or just trying to live a normal life. It feels like they could have blended *The Truman Show* with *Pleasantville*, and *The Incredibles* with a bit of *Stepford Wives*—perhaps even having the antagonist orchestrate all this either to gain companionship or to intimidate and surpass Wanda (seriously, is the villain just evil without any relatable motivations?). Instead, we’re stuck with an unremarkable series that clearly aspires to be so much more. What works well are Olsen and Bettany's performances; they both seem to enjoy having more time on screen, and their magic show is a standout moment in the earlier episodes. The supporting cast also shines, particularly Caulfield and Hahn. Surprisingly, Dennings feels restrained, which is a welcome change from her previous role. And the visual design and music are exceptional, paying clear respect to the shows that inspired it. However, beyond those missed chances, there’s an unnecessary subplot involving the military (it could have easily been contained within Wanda's mind and explored in more detail for its unsettling nature). The canned laughter is also overdone – none of the referenced programs relied on it so heavily, and it isn’t even used as a narrative device to signal something being wrong with reality. Characters come and go without explanation (Quicksilver is an example), and actions seem to have no repercussions. Given all the anticipation surrounding this show, I had hoped for something more than this underwhelming result, especially considering the efforts of Bettany, Olsen, and the rest of the cast. My expectations for a truly frightening or unsettling experience in the next *Dr Strange* film have definitely been lowered.
