"Wake" ("Vaka") falls into the category of Scandinavian shows you’re anticipating will develop into something captivating, but ultimately don't. The plot centers on a widespread illness caused by a powerful contagion—later revealed to stem from a pharmaceutical company contaminating the local water source. Those affected display red marks around their eyes and experience insomnia, which progresses to a frequently unsettling and tragic demise. While the initial concept seems promising, frequent changes in the importance of central characters, an absence of clear purpose, and what feels like unnecessary social commentary prevent it from reaching its full potential. I made it through roughly sixty to seventy percent before giving up. Positive aspects include a captivating starting point, solid performances by the cast, and some intense moments as the virus’s effects become more pronounced. Overall, this is an underwhelming show that could have done much more to hold your attention; it's only moderately enjoyable.
