This show falls short when compared to History’s previous Vikings program. I considered several elements to be completely ridiculous. The ruler of Kattegat is portrayed as Black, set in the eleventh century, which felt odd for a Norse society. One of the characters, during an initial encounter, manipulates the axe handle to avoid injuring another character—a detail that seems out of sync with Viking-era practices. A previously unseen woman (who appears to be a protagonist) arrives and reprimands everyone, including those in positions of authority; she eliminates a character who would have been significant to the storyline, yet there are no repercussions for her actions. She’s briefly detained, but then is soon seen freely walking around. It was disappointing! The writing is poor, the plot lacks purpose, and the characters are underdeveloped. They really ought to give it a different title so as not to create confusion with the excellent series from History.
