Synopsis

Vidocq detached himself from Annette and Desfossés, a calculated maneuver that allowed him to surprise the policeman. The next village had already requested assistance from Paris, and Vidocq, clutching Flambart’s papers, found himself embroiled in a criminal investigation. Baron de Flocheron lay dead, a victim of a night’s violence, and Justine, his servant and secret lover, was the prime suspect. Yet, Vidocq sensed a deception.
