Anyone expecting nods to the 2004 film will likely feel let down. The vampires come across as more like filthy creatures that feed on blood rather than the ferocious, shape-shifting beings from the movie. The setting feels reminiscent of a zombie plague, and the female character appears closer to an X-Men mutant than a regular person. Even after watching over half of the initial season, very little is explained about her background, powers, or where she came from; she simply exists, displaying a constantly shifting range of feelings and possessing the fighting abilities of someone with years of experience. Perhaps the reason for naming the show "Van Helsing" will become clear by the end of the first season, but I’m not inclined to watch another series centered on a zombie apocalypse.
