It’s among a few British police dramas that I consider exceptional, coming very close to flawless. Shows like Vera, DCI Banks, and Shetland come to mind. I don't suggest they are without fault; every program occasionally falters or misses something, but those moments hardly register. The series unfolds gradually, which makes sense given the subject matter. There aren’t any ongoing serial killer plots, kidnappings, or exciting pursuits. The cases Cassie and her team handle involve victims who died decades earlier—sometimes ten, twenty, or even fifty years ago. Before they can talk to witnesses, look into potential suspects, they must first figure out who the deceased were and how they died. The investigative group functions effectively, and the actors each contribute to solving the cases through their diligence. Like those other shows I mentioned, we aren’t pulled away from the central work by any dramatic turmoil in the lead character's life. Cassie has personal difficulties that surface, but they are relatable problems that anyone might experience. I hope to rewatch it eventually, if I ever find the time, so I can appreciate it more fully; for now, we should just enjoy the episodes as they’re released.
