True Detective has run for four seasons so far, with each installment presenting a completely new story. I’ve made my way through all of season three and several episodes of season four. Generally speaking, this is an absorbing show that's carefully constructed and smart, though the newest chapter, "Night Country," seems to incorporate elements suggesting something beyond the natural world. The performances are excellent, and the characters feel realistically developed—they possess the kinds of characteristics and imperfections you’d anticipate from actual individuals. My main reservation stems from what I perceive as unnecessary progressive messaging that would have been better omitted. It's not appropriate to portray Europeans as being accountable for global problems; it's time to move past that. Additionally, there's a discernible current of negativity toward men that becomes apparent around the sixth episode. Overall, it’s largely well-written, intelligent and captivating. I would have given it a higher score if those ideological elements had been removed.
