It’s an experience that won't appeal to everyone. _Too Old To Die Young_, created by Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn (_Pusher_; _Bleeder_; _Fear X_; _Bronson_; _Valhalla Rising_; _Drive_; _Only God Forgives_; _The Neon Demon_) and comic book writer Ed Brubaker (creator of the Winter Soldier character), is a raw expression of Refn’s artistic vision. If you found _Only God_ slow, pretentious, and style over substance, then this series will likely feel even more extreme; it makes _Only God_ seem like a mainstream action film. Comprising 10 episodes ranging from 79 to 23 minutes, Refn considers the 13-hour run time as one extended movie, distinguishing it from traditional television shows despite airing on Amazon Prime Video. I loved it. The visuals are striking, the quirks are surreal, the humor is spot-on, and the violence—particularly sexual violence—is sudden and brutal but not gratuitous. The cinematography by Darius Khondji and Diego García, along with Matthew Newman’s editing, creates a distinctive look. Episodes are often saturated with neon colors, contrasting sharply with scenes set in Mexico that employ stark whites and blacks.
