Synopsis

The murmur of voices drifted to Jack, carrying snippets of a conversation between Janet and a visitor, a nun on leave. The sister had made a decision: she would leave the convent to marry. Jack’s heart quickened. He convinced himself that he was the man in question. A desperate plan forming, he adopted a persona – a down-and-out wharf rat, haunted and self-destructive – hoping to dissuade her with tales of his failings.
