This is unpleasant and not particularly amusing. It’s common for comedians to become bitter, pessimistic, and harsh as they age; frequently, their work becomes an opportunity to mock or demean individuals or groups they consider inferior. Steve Coogan seems to have followed this pattern with his newest Alan Partridge appearance. The earlier charm of a naive Alan accidentally causing offense through awkwardness and disregard for social conventions has disappeared. Instead, Coogan employs the character to attack people he finds objectionable, essentially using the show as a way to express personal criticisms in disguise. It’s probably best to stop now.
