I thought the initial season was fairly enjoyable. It wasn’t flawless; I found the timeline difficult to grasp at times, and some of the casting decisions didn’t work out well—Fringilla stands out as an example. However, it did stay true to the narrative presented in the books. The second season is genuinely disappointing, though. The showrunners seem intent on altering the story without a good reason, and the result falls far short of what came before. With the exception of the premiere episode, the creative team appears to miss the point of what makes The Witcher’s world compelling. The Deathless Mother isn't engaging, the quick appearance of the Wild Hunt is underwhelming, and for all the unusual creatures that could have been featured, the season concludes with a fight against dinosaurs—apparently, it’s Jurassic Park now. While Henry Cavill hasn’t fully captured the essence of Geralt, I can’t fault him too much given the generally weak writing. Freya Allan as Ciri is easily the strongest aspect of this series; it's remarkable to recall that they nearly didn’t cast her, which highlights how disconnected the show’s producers are from what works. If they would just stick to the books, maybe there’s still a chance for this adaptation. Update: Season 3 is so bad it doesn’t even warrant discussion.
