WD Dead City, based on what I’ve seen in the premiere, seems to be struggling with a common problem for spin-offs: a lack of fresh ideas. There's just something stale and contrived about everything. The pairing of two characters burdened by a history of conflict feels familiar, as does the generic antagonist. A character from earlier installments has been brought back and given an unwarranted boost in significance and menace. The show isn’t helped by some awkward storytelling devices either. We're presented with stereotypical law enforcement figures in a bleak setting, along with a silly wanted poster featuring Negan—all evoking a cheap imitation of post-apocalyptic Westerns. The image of zombies jumping from buildings is another uninspired moment that does nothing to alleviate the overall sense of sluggishness and apathy. I’m holding out hope that the series will improve, but if it continues on this trajectory, it could end up in the same place as Fear the Walking Dead: a destination that's neither compelling nor enjoyable.
