Chicago, December 18, 1930. In a dimly lit, rundown pool hall on the southside, Herbie Catcher is hustling eight-ball for fifty cents a game. Not a skilled player, Herbie is thoroughly defeated by Cooker and loses his money. His closest companion is Josh, a kind Black man who is blind and works at the pool hall. “You’d be surprised at what I can see,” Josh says. “I'm an owl in the dark.” ("Owl" is his nickname.)
