Synopsis

January 1933 in Chicago. A prominent sign announces Danceland: "Thirty girls, open until two a.m." Inside, patrons move amongst the dancers available for a dime per dance. Hoofer Ellie Haskell bids goodnight to the owner, Marty Pulaski; moments later, as she steps outside, she is fatally shot by a sniper positioned on the roof of a building across the street – the assassin is Herbie Pulaski, Marty's brother, afflicted with mental instability.
