Under the cloak of night on May 25th, 1931, two trucks rumbled into Kansas City, their holds filled with a million dollars worth of Jamaica Ginger rotgut, colloquially known as "Ginger Jake." The vehicles belonged to Rafael Torrez, a gangster and influential racehorse trainer who held a near-exclusive control over the distribution of the potent liquor.
