The Thaw isn't perfect, but it has qualities that make it worth watching. What works well is the sense of authenticity surrounding the characters; they generally come across as believable people. The writing succeeds in this regard, and the casting choices are good, with Polish performers who convincingly inhabit their parts. However, the storytelling isn't always successful. There were moments in the initial season when the plot felt muddled, and the last episode was quite strange. It’s hard to understand why a grieving man would be given an official firearm and asked to supervise a criminal responsible for his daughter's death. Overall, it's a reasonably good crime drama series, though occasionally let down by uneven and unlikely narrative choices.
