While I wouldn’t place this among the show's finest work, and it falls outside of what most fans consider its peak years—seasons four through eight—it remains my personal favorite. The episode really captures the essence of what made *The Simpsons* so special during the 1990s: a good balance of sentimentality, silliness that doesn’t go too far over the top, and a way to include famous people without the episode feeling like an advertisement for them—I appreciate the irony in saying that, given he portrays Michael Jackson.
