It's easy to mistake this story about Catherine de’ Medici—a 16th-century Italian noblewoman who later became Queen of France—for a gathering of costumed enthusiasts from modern-day England. The series doesn’t feel particularly Italian; it has a distinctly British quality that, unfortunately, detracts from its portrayal as an Italian historical drama. This impression is worsened by the predictable and wearying revisionist viewpoint it takes, which is full of historically inaccurate progressive ideas. Presenting Catherine as an "empowered woman" through a contemporary feminist lens ignores who she actually was: a formidable noblewoman and leader. Those wanting to feel sorry for the supposedly mistreated Catherine should simply read some of her unsettling correspondence. It’s disappointing, and feels like a missed opportunity, considering the excellent actors and high production standards. Ultimately, it's revisionist nonsense that any reasonable historian would dismiss as inaccurate historical fiction.
