In the heart of London, 1886, shadows lengthen and secrets fester. Beneath the veneer of everyday life in bustling Soho, shopkeeper Verloc leads a double existence. To his devoted wife, Winnie, he appears to be simply a man running a modest business. But unbeknownst to her – and most of those around him – Verloc is entangled in a dangerous game, serving as a covert operative for a formidable foreign power.
At the behest of the Russian authorities, Verloc received an assignment: to engineer an explosion attributable to anarchist elements, thereby inciting a governmental response and political repression within Britain.
Having enlisted Winnie’s younger brother, Stevie, as an accomplice in his scheme, Verloc journeyed with the boy to Michaelis’ rural estate.
With officials still grappling to understand the motives for the incident in Greenwich, Chief Inspector Heat orders Verloc’s arrest.
