I just completed watching the initial season of "The Penguin," and I'm writing this review immediately afterward. For me, it earns an 8/10—a really strong rating on my personal scale, although that would translate to around a 9/10 on IMDb. It’s an HBO series. While nothing is flawless, I believe the show is exceptionally well-made. I don't anticipate a second season being produced, and frankly, it doesn't require one; it functions very well as its own complete story. The series expands upon the events of "The Batman" (starring Robert Pattinson) and details the Penguin’s ascent to power, connecting the narrative between that film and the upcoming sequel. I wholeheartedly suggest watching it—but I would request that if you don't find yourself immediately engaged, give at least the first three episodes a try before deciding. While familiarity with "The Batman" isn't essential, as the Penguin only appears in a supporting role there, functioning simply as a capo within Gotham’s organized crime network, the series does allude to certain events from that movie (like some areas being flooded after an act of terrorism). However, as I mentioned, you don’t need to know those details to understand what's happening. It would certainly be beneficial to have seen the film, particularly since it is quite good. It’s also important to note that we are presented with a character who is essentially a villain—an anti-hero. I won’t elaborate further on this aspect; discovering his true nature is part of what makes the series compelling, and perhaps you'll be as misled by his schemes as the other characters within the show are.
