The series stumbles into predictable pitfalls. It sacrifices the lightheartedness and excitement for an emphasis on romantic complications or serious, depressing events. There’s a long succession of moments featuring just two individuals in a location delivering solemn statements. Furthermore, only one character provides any comic relief. When a program depends on a single person to offer some levity, it's essential that the individual is genuinely amusing. The actor portraying Janzo delivers an odd performance that’s more awkward than engaging and feels very uneven. I couldn’t determine what kind of personality they were attempting to create. Is he supposed to be smart? Or not so bright? He shifts between these traits based on what's needed for the plot of a particular episode. Then, in season 2, his appearance changes dramatically; he becomes something of an attractive romantic lead—though not consistently. The show didn’t quite succeed in several respects. I should mention that I enjoy lower-budget, intentionally silly adventure stories.
