This British TV show holds a special place for me; I generally trust BBC productions and wasn't let down here. I’d been looking forward to it, but put off watching it for months, and now I wish I hadn’t waited so long – it’s one of the best secret intelligence thrillers I’ve seen. The story itself isn't groundbreaking: a man is sent undercover to get close to an international criminal and relay information back to his agency. It sounds simple enough, but there’s something different about how it's handled here. It's structured as a mini-series with six episodes, each feeling like its own installment in a spy film series – which would have been a great idea on its own; it could easily have become one of the best films of that kind. The story moves around to different locations across the globe in each episode. There aren’t any big surprises in the plot; everything is presented directly, but information is revealed when needed. What really makes it stand out are the performances, particularly from the main actors, including Tom Hiddleston, Hugh Laurie, Elizabeth Debicki, Olivia Colman, and others. The story begins with a night manager at a hotel in Cairo who gets caught up in an international criminal scheme but manages to escape physically unharmed, though emotionally wounded. Years later, he encounters the same group again in another part of the world, and this time decides to do things right. His plan is to infiltrate the organization and gather information. He successfully gains access, and the challenges he faces are what drive the suspense forward. I really liked the casting choices, the locations were fantastic, and the production quality was superb; it’s clear a lot of care went into making this show. It's reportedly the BBC’s most expensive television production to date, and that investment clearly paid off in terms of recognition – it received widespread praise. The attention to detail is excellent; they took their time to get everything right, otherwise it could have been condensed into three or four episodes. It won three Golden Globes, three BAFTA awards, and two Emmys, earning accolades across almost every major category that it was eligible for. If you enjoy television series, this one’s definitely worth watching: it's a familiar theme explored in a brilliant way with great actors, beautiful locations, and a fitting musical score.
