Synopsis

Maxwell’s father is visiting, and Fran resolves to intervene in the long-standing Sheffield family discord by inviting James Sheffield to dinner. He arrives with Joan, his former secretary – the woman for whom he abandoned Max’s mother. During the meal, Maxwell is consumed by outrage at his father's blatant selfishness. Meanwhile, Fran finds herself repeatedly questioning why Maxwell cannot embody the same pragmatism as his father, and settle down with someone of a lower social standing.
