I had high hopes for this adaptation, yet I suspected that a story of this size would likely struggle to succeed again after an earlier effort. Naturally, while watching, it was hard to avoid drawing comparisons with the 1986 movie. That older version felt nearly perfect in its casting choices. The significant error, however, was the omission of a vast amount of medieval culture due to time constraints; instead, they focused on a detective plot and stretched out the melodrama – even the title’s meaning seemed to be taken that way. The reasons for these changes are understandable, but ultimately the film didn't succeed. To its credit, this new series does follow the book's understanding of the title.
