The eight-episode length of The Mechanism feels like just about the right amount, and I'm trusting it won't go on much longer. There are some genuinely interesting stories rooted in actual events from Brazil concerning corruption. Still, certain details felt farfetched—particularly the prison scenes. The way the whole syndicate was held seemed improbable, bringing to mind jail settings from old Westerns, with men and women sharing the same cell block. I was pretty engrossed for the initial five episodes, but after that I started to find it a little slow and predictable. It was nice to see something different, though, a series that didn’t seem to originate from Hollywood. It wasn't another of those pre-packaged shows we’ve been given.
