I want to state upfront that I haven’t engaged with Philip K. Dick's novel, *The Man in the High Castle*, and have no plans to do so; my assessment is based solely on the series itself. To keep things straightforward, I’ll provide a brief overview without delving into spoilers. Here’s what you should know. As a science fiction narrative, *The Man in the High Castle* doesn't entirely succeed. The showrunners attempted to conclude the sci-fi elements toward the end, but their efforts were rather clumsy. It's unclear whether this was due to budget limitations or a tight production schedule. Thankfully, the strength of the series isn’t rooted in its science fiction aspects. What truly elevates *The Man in the High Castle* is its alternative history and the development of its characters; specifically, the storyline surrounding the Smiths—the most influential family within the Nazis' American Reich—is exceptionally well done. Through John and Helen Smith, we are given a glimpse into what it might have meant for ordinary Americans to align themselves with the Nazi Party had the Axis powers been victorious in World War II. Using conversations and flashbacks, the series illustrates how their involvement with the Nazi Party transformed both John and Helen into people fundamentally different from who they once were. Their story arc was easily my favorite part of the show and serves as its foundation. You won’t feel compassion for John or Helen, but you will understand them—and you'll likely feel sorry for their children. The series also benefits from compelling suspense and action sequences, along with a strong female lead. Despite my earlier comments about the science fiction elements, I wouldn’t let that deter you. While the resolution of that part of the story may have been lacking, all of the characters' stories reached satisfactory conclusions—with only one minor exception that didn’t significantly detract from my overall enjoyment.
