It’s reminiscent of Deadwood combined with Taboo. The story unfolds in colonial New Zealand during the gold rush, centering on two recent arrivals attempting to find wealth. Hewson and Patel deliver strong performances as the main characters, along with Csokas, who is consistently dependable and deserves more recognition. However, Eva Green truly dominates every appearance, particularly during the séance scenes. The narrative occasionally feels overly complicated, especially due to its non-linear structure; there were moments when I struggled to keep track of the timeline. But this eventually became clear and ultimately proved worthwhile in the last episode. The production design and costumes are exceptional, contributing significantly to the show’s ability to transport you to that era. I appreciated seeing this period of New Zealand's past depicted on screen—from racial divisions and opium use to the methods of prospecting—the series portrays it accurately. It makes for a pleasant six-hour viewing experience; I suggest watching if you are interested in exploring a different historical setting or enjoy being captivated by Eva Green’s presence.
