This series is simply awful, even compared to Netflix’s less successful offerings. It feels as though HBO hasn’t caught up with current events; the political climate has shifted, but they remain fixated on outdated progressive themes. The show seems designed to antagonize those who hold different viewpoints. I found episode 3 of the first season particularly offensive and believe everyone involved in its creation should be embarrassed by it. It's preferable to face death with dignity rather than endure a life filled with shame and regret. Beyond the promotion of LGBTQ+ themes, there are alterations made regarding racial representation that feel forced. For instance, Joe’s daughter was originally depicted as white in the source material but is now portrayed as Black in this adaptation. Similarly, Tommy's wife’s race has been changed from white to Black, which seems deliberate and discriminatory. There are also numerous scenes featuring lesbian relationships throughout the series—just more examples of unwelcome messaging. The show is filled with manipulative propaganda. Ellie’s characterization is jarringly different. While her sexuality is present in the original game, it's a minor detail; here, it’s amplified to serve as an obvious political statement. She comes across as a petulant and foul-mouthed individual, which was a poor casting choice. The plot is formulaic, and the characters consistently make illogical choices. Overall, this show exemplifies HBO’s decline in quality and contains excessive objectionable content.
