The fragile peace of Mercia is tested as Edward and Æthelflæd clash over its direction and the ambitious vision their father held for a unified England. Amidst this growing tension, Uhtred remains relentlessly driven by a singular goal: reclaiming what was stolen from him – his rightful place among his own kin.
News reached Uhtred that the defenses of Bebbanburg had been eroded by Scottish raids, presenting an opportunity to reclaim his ancestral home. Yet, Edward offered no assistance in his endeavor.
The approach to Bebbanburg brought Uhtred and his companions nearer to their objective, while the wayward son, Wihtgar, reappeared with unexpected resources. Across the sea, in Wessex, tidings of Cnut’s betrayal were received.
Though hard-pressed in the assault on Bebbanburg, Uhtred endured a grievous loss, yet managed to secure valuable captives during his southward withdrawal. Meanwhile, Aethelflaed made preparations for war.
Anticipating the arrival of Edward’s forces, Aethelflaed and Uhtred forged an alliance with the Welsh, preparing to confront Cnut’s formidable army of a thousand warriors at the Battle of Tettenhall.
Aethelred, nearing the end of his life, remained a figure of regret as his regional leaders maneuvered for dominance over Mercia. Meanwhile, Edward employed his niece, Aelfwynn, as a tool in his power plays.
