It brings to mind "Vikings," but in my opinion, it surpasses that show. There are a couple of small things holding The Last Kingdom back: the camera work and lighting occasionally feel like they were done by someone less experienced, and I remember the combat sequences not being as skillfully presented—the choreography, editing, and filming just aren't quite up to par when put next to "Vikings." Aside from those issues, I consider The Last Kingdom superior in every respect. Even the actor who appears early on in the first season of The Last Kingdom is better than the one featured at the start of "Vikings"—Rutger Hauer is simply ideal! Gabriel Byrne, though... I'm just not sure what they were thinking with that casting.
