It’s a fairly good crime series. The dynamic between DC Manning (Ember) and her mother—specifically Ember confronting her mother about not safeguarding her when she was a teenager, given what’s happening now—is compelling and warranted further development. Similarly, the unsettling environment surrounding young girls in the area, which gets overshadowed by the 17-year-old case of Amy, could have been handled differently; prioritizing the cold case over the present investigation might have felt more realistic, both from a police procedural and narrative standpoint. This would have opened up opportunities to examine heavier and more intense themes. (Spoiler alert) The concluding reveal, while perhaps not entirely original, is still engaging. It was almost inevitable that a crime show would attempt something like this, I suppose. There are certainly some convenient plot devices involved that might feel somewhat contrived and unsatisfactory (like the incident being an accident rather than a murder, or the use of drugs to affect memory), but it’s hard to imagine other ways to resolve things. Had the series maintained a better equilibrium between its various threads, and not been so singularly concerned with discovering who killed Amy, the final twist might have seemed less central, and therefore more easily accepted. All in all, even taking those points into account, it's a perfectly respectable program within its genre.
