The series centers on four teenage boys navigating their last few years of high school, depicting their lives both inside and outside the classroom. I realize I must have overlooked this excellent show when it originally aired in 2008, but after watching all three seasons over the past month or so, I can confidently say that it's a very funny sitcom! As a woman, my high school experiences weren’t entirely dissimilar to those of these boys, even though I attended an all-girls school. The show explores the challenges of growing up, touching on common teenage themes like underage drinking in pubs, romantic relationships, peer pressure, conflicts with parents, getting behind the wheel for the first time, rebelling against authority, a dislike of teachers, experimenting with drugs, and, well, lots of sexual encounters. The four boys are a great mix: there’s Neil, who is kind but not particularly bright; Will, a privileged student adjusting to a public school after his mother's divorce; Jay, an overconfident dreamer; and Simon, a charming young man. Much of the show unfolds from Will’s perspective as he struggles to fit in at a state school because his family could no longer afford private education. Simon is his closest friend. He dislikes his parents, but only when it's convenient for him, and he desperately wants a girlfriend—not necessarily for love, but more to boast to his friends about having had sexual experience. This pressure comes from Jay, who lives in a fantasy world, constantly exaggerating his romantic conquests and portraying himself as a sexual Lothario, although the reality is far different. Then there's Neil – he’s slow to understand things and rarely has original thoughts beyond getting drunk, trying to date girls (unsuccessfully), and aspiring to be a pilot. The show contains profanity and references to sexuality, but there’s no nudity, and any sexual scenes are handled discreetly. There are plenty of laughs throughout, although I felt that by the third season, the humor started to lose some of its freshness. Fortunately, the television series concluded at that point (even though two films were made afterward). It's probably not a show you’d want to watch with your parents, but it is very funny in a crude and immature way.
