Having established Henry V on the throne, this production examines both his nature and Tom Hiddleston’s portrayal—something I wasn’t entirely satisfied with. His previous work in the Henry IV plays benefited from his depiction of a charming rogue alongside strong performances from actors like Simon Russell Beale and Julie Walters. With him now holding the highest position, domestic and international political schemes become central, the comedy disappears, and we enter familiar territory. The narrative centers on the king being pushed toward conflict with Charles VI (Lambert Wilson) regarding claims to the French throne originating with Edward III of England. While the Dauphin (Edward Akrout) emerges as a key obstacle, he’s just one of many challenges the new ruler encounters while trying to establish his power and determine who is trustworthy. The battle sequences are what truly shine; the stunt work, filming, and visual design are impressive given what seems to have been a small television budget and limited resources—director Thea Sharrock avoids excessive CGI to enhance the visuals. The script adaptation is concise and works well, but it lacks impact somehow. It’s possible this stems from the story and characters being so familiar, or perhaps simply because the lead actor doesn't possess the necessary weight to portray the role convincingly. It remains an enjoyable historical drama, though ultimately feels less substantial than one might hope.
