The German fantasy horror series, The Gryphon, seems initially aimed at viewers in their late teens and early twenties, but I believe it has something to offer anyone who chooses to watch it. Despite some creature effects that occasionally resemble people wearing monster costumes, there’s a great deal to appreciate about this show. To begin with, the fantasy horror background is remarkably original, varied, and imaginative. It incorporates elements of Gothic horror alongside suggestions of Lovecraft, The Lord of the Rings, The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, and other works, but presented in its own distinctive way. The otherworldly aspects of this story are very well managed. The narrative quickly and believably captures your attention. The development of the characters is also handled with consideration; both main and supporting roles possess a certain level of complexity, moving from ordinary, believable people to threatening monsters with their own hidden plans—some visible, others concealed. The acting deserves recognition as well. The cast, comprised of actors of different ages, delivers strong performances that contribute significantly to the series’ overall appeal. I watched most of The Gryphon in a single session, intending to do other things that afternoon and evening; I have to admit, those plans were largely abandoned. Overall, this is truly an exceptional find. It's a highly original, creative, and captivating show. If you enjoy Gothic horror with fantasy elements, then this series will likely appeal to you. Subtitles or a dubbed version are available, depending on your preference.
