The Good Place premiered on NBC in Fall 2016 and is a fantasy-comedy series that distinguishes itself from typical television sitcoms through its serialized storytelling—each episode builds upon the previous one. The production chose to forgo the use of a laugh track. There are six primary characters: Janet and Michael (played by Ted Danson), who manage what’s referred to as the Good Place, while Eleanora, Chidi, Tahani, and Jason are recently deceased individuals struggling to understand their presence there. I consider this show remarkably inventive. It tackles subjects rarely explored in TV comedy—namely death, the afterlife, guilt, and personal responsibility—but approaches them with considerable humor. A recurring gag involves a spell that substitutes profanity with milder terms like "fork" or "shirt," which frustrates characters who want to express themselves more forcefully. The show’s cast is notably diverse; three of the main six are Filipino, Asian-Indian, and Senegalese. Because Chidi was previously a philosophy professor, there's also an intellectual element as he attempts to comprehend his new, permanent home. Juxtaposed with the orderly environment of the Good Place are frequent comedic flashbacks depicting the characters’ chaotic past lives, reminiscent of "Lost." I suggest this series to anyone seeking something outside the usual fare.
