The Expanse functions as a television version of James S. A. Corey’s novels—a collective effort by two authors who share that name. While it stays true to the books, the show doesn't follow a one-to-one structure; instead, each season generally covers the content of an entire novel. Regardless, this is a really good series. The characters feel authentic within the context of a future largely governed by corporations. It’s true that the initial episodes suffer from some unevenness in their rhythm, but this isn't a major issue and it improves as the story progresses. Here’s the background: Earth exists with its government fractured, with factions vying for dominance over Mars and the developing political structure of the Belt. Mars views itself as largely independent—and rightfully so—and is committed to a long-term plan to transform the planet so that people won't need to live under protective domes. The Belt encompasses those living in the asteroid belt and beyond. And if all this political instability wasn’t enough, something else is on its way...
